Last - Ditch Attempts Fail to Raise Budget

The" house appropriated $7,150,000 Monday night for three self-financed building projects at MStJ. The projects include resi­ dence halls and food service “facilities for 1,200 students at $6,000,000 and 116 mar­ ried students apartments at $1,150,000. The residence halls will.be located on a terr-acre plot be­ tween Birch Rd. and Maple Lane, facing Chestnut Rd. Married housing apartments will be located on the east side of Harrison Rd. between Chest­ nut Rd. and the Grand Trunk Western railroad tracks. J ~ Also included in the 835 mil­ lion building project bill passed were $2.700.000 for MSU-Oakland, which will be used for new residence halls, an addi­ tion to the student union build­ ing, and for the construction of an intramural building. Central Michigan University reeeived $1,604.200 for the con­ struction of residence halls to house $20 students and con­ struction of 16 married hous­ ing units. Approval of the bill as rec­ ommended by the house ways and means committee was vote<l .after the house rejected an attempt by Rep. E. D. O’Brien <D-Detroit) to delete all of the projects planned at MSU, U of M, and Wayne State Universi­ ty . ' O’Brien said these three uni­ versities are-“big enough al­ ready,” and erection of more dormitories will oiily encourage further growth. He said emphasis should be placed on community colleges ‘•where we get a better value for our dollar.” House Ways and Mgms Com­ mittee Chairman Rep. Arnell Engstrom (R-Traverse City) said his committee approved the bill after exploring the question of enrollment growth with the university presidents. He sa id the presidents thought the universities are-go­ ing to get bigger and ‘iwe think so. too.” After the house approved the bill, a resolution authorizing the construction was sent to the Senate for further action.
